WANDERINGS OF AN ARTIST
 IN FAR WEST TEXAS

Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine TX is home to Trappings of Texas

TRAPPINGS OF TEXAS 2008

TRAPPINGS OF TEXAS is the second longest running cowboy gear and fine western art exhibit and sale. It is held in conjunction with the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

The prestigious 22nd annual Trappings event not only helps preserve the heritage of the west: The Auction is the primary source of funds for Museum programs each year. (The auction is at 10 am Sat. March 1 in Lawrence Hall on the Sul Ross campus. Pre-view items beginning at 9:45 that morning.)

In addition to the Public Auction, Trappings hosts a unique Wall Sale featuring works by noted western artists and fine cowboy craftsmen from across the US, Canada, Australia, and South America.

An invitational show, Trappings sticks to pure western fine art and authentic gear. Serious collectors and buyers travel to Alpine to claim meticulously crafted spurs, bits, saddles, quirts, and framed art capturing the lonesome west of the cowboy.

The Wall Sale opens with a ticketed preview party Fri. nite, Feb. 29.

Work purchased that night, as well as unsold items will hang at the Museum through April. Admission is free, the art, available for purchase through the Museum.

All entries are authentic, created by artists who live the landscape, if not the life; the handcrafted gear is functional as well as beautifully crafted.

Fort Davis, TX landscape Lindy Severns took
Best of Show (art) in the 2007 Trappings
event for her impressionistic pastel landscape, COMING STORM.

Other Fort Davis artists at Trappings include award winners Wayne Baize and Bill Leftwich.

(For a county with about 2400 people, there's plenty of fine art riding around these parts. Saddle up and come see for yourself!)

Guest curators: Leland Hensley (gear) and Michael Duty: (art),
Museum Director: Larry Francell
Assistant Director: Liz Jackson
Show curator: Mary Bones.
